By 10:00am this morning, the Zoobridge came to a rest on St. George Island after being lifted from the piers upon which it had sat for 109 years.
The lifting operation seems to have gone much more smoothly and quickly compared to last Friday’s attempt, so quickly that I personally missed a substantial amount of the move.
It turns out the actual weight of the bridge was closer to 120 tonnes, rather than the expected 90 tonnes.
Crews had to work over the weekend to lighten the superstructure by about 15 tonnes.
It’s all in the hands of the breakers now, who will dismantle the structure and safely remove the lead contaminated components.
Specific components will be preserved for posterity.
