These are the last days of the old Zoobridge.
According to CBC Calgary, the bridge is to be closed on March 29, 2017 and a celebration of the bridge and its history is to be held on April 22, 2017 from 1:00-3:00pm (details still to come).
The date chosen for the celebration of the bridge, April 22 2017, is an important anniversary from the bridge’s early history.
April 22, 1907 is the 110th anniversary of the day City Council read Bylaw #729 passed third reading. This bylaw authorized the City to borrow $25,000.00 for the construction of a bridge to the St. George’s Island.
With the passage of the Bylaw, City Engineer Speakman was directed to call for tenders for the construction of a steel structure to provide a permanent link to the Island Park.
